It was just oo nice to sit at home and slowly watch the sun set behind the Rocky Mountains. So, we jumped up with 30 min of daylight left, ran out the door and took a few shots of the boys during the golden hour. Ryland is almost 5.5 years old and Easton just turned 3 a couple months ago. You’ve probably have seen these on Facebook, but I had to post on the blog as well. Enjoy!

Another BEAUTIFUL day on top of Steamboat Mountain! Brian and Melissa’s wedding was full of love, laugher and a few happy tears. They had an amazing Jewish ceremony, in which the Rabbi did a fantastic job telling the guests about tradition and the stories behind them. Loved it!

The reception was an absolute pleasure to photograph, lots of dancing and smiling (something you will have to wait until tomorrow to see).

Melissa and Brian, thank you for having me as your wedding photographer, I wish you all the best in your marriage together!

Emily and Todd got married at the top of Mt. Werner in Steamboat Springs, CO. It was a BEAUTIFUL Friday afternoon and the scenery was just stunning at the top of the mountain. Both Emily and Todd opted for a “first look”, so all the formal pictures would be completed before the ceremony. We had an awesome time treking around downtown Steamboat taking pictures AND have to give a big shout-out to Ghost Ranch Saloon for opening a little early to let us take the wedding party inside. Part 1 will be getting ready, first look and wedding party. Part 2, which will be tomorrow, will be ceremony, reception and sunset images!!! :-) ENJOY!!

We have had some beautiful nights here in Denver and surrounding areas, however, this might have been one of the most perfect evenings in Steamboat Springs! The weather was amazing and Katie and Jed looked stunning! They got married at Marabou Ranch (which looked like it could have been the cover for a Garth Brooks album) and partied until late night. Denver, CO Event Photographer…The Children’s Museum Birthday Bash

This past Friday I was honored to be the photographer for the Children’s Museum Magical Madrid Birthday Bash fundraiser. This is their largest fundraising event of the year and it was spectacular!! Lots of awesome items at the silent auction, delish food from Occasions By Sandy, a super-fun live auction, Flamenco Dancers, and a rockin’ band, Funkiphino, that finished up the night.

I met a lot of the gals from The Children’s Museum who helped orchestrate this event…Lisa, Heather, Amy, Micki, Zoe, but I know there were LOTS and LOTS of amazing staff that put on this wonderful event! Great job everyone!!

Products that changed my career in Photography

Today I wanted to highlight several products that have literally changed both my photography and my business. When I first started this journey I struggled with time management, editing and balancing it all with my family life. I would stay up until 1, 2 and even 3 AM trying to get “stuff” done. These products have saved me so much time and were worth every penny (in no particular order). NOTE: None of the companies/products below are nudging me to write these quick reviews, it is all from me.

#1 – Moirai Compositor – Storyboards/Collages are a big seller for me. When creating a storyboard for a client, I used to sit at my desk, starring at Photoshop, and count each little notch on the ruler in order to center each image perfectly. I had so many little blue lines across my screen that it started to look like a laser-security blueprint. Then, I purchased Moirai Compositor (thank YOU!). Not only can I put a storyboard together in about 1 minute, but I can also design an entire album pretty quickly, too.

Below is a screen shot of me creating a 10 x 20 storyboard using 6 images. It is giving me 15 different ways to arrange those images on a 10 x 20 sheet. LOVE!

#2 – Adobe Lightroom – I think this one is a no-brainer for lots of photographers out there. I don’t even know the extent of how powerful this program is, but from a wedding-editing stand-point, this has let me hang out with my family in the evenings. To have the ability to sort, organize, flag and batch-process has saved me lots and lots of time in PS.

#3 – 85mm 1.4 Zeiss Lens – Hello beautiful!! My oh my, this is my go-to lens. Probably stays on my camera 80% of the time. This gives me that awesome shallow depth-of-field that makes my subjects completely stand out. The other 20% of my time, I am shooting with my macro, wide-angle and 70-200mm. Next on my list is the 35mm.

#4 – ShootQ – On-line based, studio management software. Just for the sheer fact of organizing invoices and sending them out in a timely manner is AWESOME. I used to sit down with my old-school calendar (yes, the paper kind that you actually flip through) and write down when I had to send out invoice emails. ShootQ allows me to enter all the appropriate invoice dates and it is linked up to my Google Merchants account (another great investment), giving the client an easy way to online bill-pay. All contracts are now signed electronically and any correspondence are now filed away online. Rad!

#5 – Shared Google Calendars – As mentioned in #4 above, I used to have a non-digital calendar. I am such a techie person, but for some reason I just couldn’t get rid of my paper calendar. Well, after having to “chat” with my husband every night about what was happening in our business lives, I had to commit to Google. Having a shared online Google Calendar has been extremely helpful when scheduling life.

#6 – Custom Into The Darkroom Blogsite – I can’t say enough positive things about this company. Completely professional, awesome customer service and amazing design team. About a year and a half ago (maybe longer) I had a vision that I felt represented my work, my personality and my uniqueness. I wanted my brand, my blog and my logo to be one-of-a-kind. I wanted to stand out. Your brand is such an important piece of your business…it’s what makes your company YOU! Into the Darkroom help me achieve my goals and I am forever thankful. :-)

Gasoline Alley…Colorado Occasions

I recently met up with the fabulous Erica, owner of the wedding-planning company Colorado Occasions. She has an absolute passion for planning weddings and we had a great chat together!! I decided to drill her with a few questions so we could get to know her and this was her responses:

1. What is your favorite type of food?

I love Asain Food. If I could eat it every day I would. I also seem to have a hard time staying away from Reese Peanut Butter Cups…

2. Other than wedding-planning, what are some of your hobbies?

I would have to say (when Im not playing with my two pups, Sadie and Murphy), you can find me cooking, or enjoying a good movie. I cherish Sunday’s during football season (Go Broncos!) and during the summer’s you will find me outdoors camping and hiking 14ner’s.

3. What kind of music is currently on your ipod?

I would say Im rather musically eclectic… I listen to everything fom the Doobie Brothers, to Jack Johnson, Tim McGraw, Eminem, to Lady Gaga. It really depends on my mood!

4. Why did you decide to go into business as a wedding planner?

I have always been a planner, and super organized. No detail is too small in my eyes. Whether it was our high school groups senior play day – to my best friends surprise birthday party in college – to charity kickball tournaments - you could always find me laboring over the details of the next shin-dig. I was offered an opportunity to work with a premier planner in Tampa, and I took the opportunity with guns blazing. I feel madly in love with weddings and the event planning industry…and Wha-la! Here I am today starting my second company here in Colorado.

5. Why should a bride and groom hire a wedding planner?

Who wouldn’t want to be a guest of honor at their wedding? In all seriousness, hiring a planner is an investment. One that will save you precious time and prevents you from making costly mistakes. We are professionals, (with experience, education, and expertise in all things wedding) and we may just have a few tricks up our sleeves when it comes to getting the best vendors for your day. I really strive to be a resource, a wealth of knowledge, for my couples, I work for you!

6. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you visit?

The Mediterranean. I cant wait until I get the chance to visit Greece and Italy.

7. What is one of your favorite unique touches you’ve seen at a wedding?

My favorite part of a wedding, is when the personality of the couple shines through (Im talking more than colors and monograms here). One of the most memorable and unique weddings I participated in was a Gothic Mad Hatter Tea Party, with cup cakes served in tea cups!

Introducing my new graphic designer and blog contributor…Laura!

A few new and exciting changes are going on at Keri Doolittle Photography! I would like to introduce you to Laura, who will be a weekly blog contributor and my new graphic designer! She will be handling client communications when brides and grooms are ready to start the album-design process. I hired Laura through The Concierges, which she will explain below. To get to know Laura a little more, here are a few questions I asked her last week:

1. What is your favorite type of food?

I LOVE food! You could even go so far as to call me a foodie. Thai, Greek, Italian – I love it all! But my all-time favorites remain pizza and chocolate chip cookies What can I say, I’m still a kid at heart!

2. What are some of your hobbies?

I love going hiking and camping with my hubby, reading books by our pool, DIY house projects, leading the young adults ministry at our church, entertaining friends at our home, and traveling pretty much anywhere!

3. What songs are currently on your ipod?

I have really varied music tastes! Right now my favs are: Sleepyhead by Passion Pit; Animal, Silvia, and Black & Blue by Miike Snow; Love Song and Mean by Taylor Swift; the Wolfgang Amadeus album by Phoenix; and the Aftermath album by Hillsong United.

4. What was one of the best moments of your wedding day?

How can I pick just one?! Trouncing and laughing our way through the woods for our bride and groom portraits with our photographer; Watching our niece and nephews skipping, hoping and tumbling their way down the aisle, ringing bells and squealing “the bride is coming!”; Sharing an intimate moment together while taking communion; And the dozens of reception toasts and impromptu kissing competition

5. Explain a little bit about The Concierges:

The Concierges is a full-service, outsourced (in the US) business management service – with personality! We do everything from write blog posts to send invoices to answer clients calls to album design to marketing… basically, we do it all!

6. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you visit?

One of the places we went on our honeymoon was the Amalfi Coast in Italy. It was like a fairytale! Gorgeous, relaxing, and amazing food! I would love to go back again one day! Also at the top of my list are Santorini and Mykonos in Greece.

7. What do you like most about album design?

I’ve loved art my entire life. Even as a toddler, my mom wrote about my love of all things artistic in my baby book. I received my degree in Graphic Design from Iowa State University, and have worked as a graphic and web designer for the past ten years. I have also always had a passion for photography, for capturing those special moments of life in a tangible form. I love album design because it brings together those two passions of mine.

OK, when Katie and I were in Monterey, we did a little shopping and bought some new hats (BTW, Katie is my younger sister). We thought it would be fun to dink around with our cameras and take some new hat shots. Well, Katie got all cute and I was stuck with a fun hat, a sweatshirt and a scarf (don’t judge me). :-)

Parker, CO Children’s Photographer…Easton’s Two-Year Old Pictures (part 2)

On Sunday, Easton turned 2-years-old! YEAH!!! :-) We had some crazy-warm weather here in Denver last week (nearly 70 degrees), so we took advantage of the beautiful weather and took some formal bday pics of Easton.

Two year old’s don’t have a very long attention span, so we shot for about 20 minutes and played a few games to keep him entertained. In the first image we were singing “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”. HAPPY BIRTHDAY EASTON!!

We also did a quick Valentine’s Day photo for the kiddos V-day cards! Here is Ryland and Easton with their matching Mickey shirts!

Good Monday morning!! First, a little schedule update…I will be leaving the country tomorrow to shoot a beautiful, tropical wedding, so the blog will be neglected for about a week or so.

In other news, Denver got dumped on last night so today is a SNOW DAY!! The kiddos are having fun playing at home and I am leaving shortly for a fabulous Style Shoot with some amazing vendors…more to come shortly!! :-)

Ryland got a doctors set from Grandma Jackie this Christmas and he LOVES it. A fan favorite are the glasses that came with the set. Here is Easton modeling them for me. TOO CUTE!!!
