Anytime I want to practice some skills, little Ryland comes to my rescue! He may not look into the camera, but I don’t care, he is a willing subject, which is WONDERFUL. Today’s practice was more off-camera lighting. Today I shot through an umbrella to diffuse the light a bit. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. That is the beauty of practicing!
Here are a few shots from the “photo shoot”. It isn’t the most appealing of locations, but I really didn’t want to have to drive anywhere, so they are taken in our neighborhood.![]()
NOTE: These were taken at about 4:30 PM, it was still really light outside, although the pictures look like it might be later in the day.
Thanks Ryland!!

It really is a very cool effect. Crazy how the sky looks so much darker. Good stuff!
They are all so good, but the effect in the last one is just craazy! I have seen pictures like that, and always wondered how they do it.. You are such a great photographer!
He’s getting so big! Love seeing the reflection in the sunglasses shot. He’s a cutie!
LOVE these pictures! I also use my kiddos for photo opps….the best “free” labor ever…ok, maybe a sucker for some bribery. Also, that chair is FABULOUS! I noticed you had a larger couch in another session. I am soooooo looking for a vintagey piece just like that!
